Title:

Rare Book Cataloger (This is a 3-year grant-funded position)

 

Environment:

Home to the world's largest Shakespeare collection and a primary repository for research material from the early modern period (1500-1750), Folger Shakespeare Library is an internationally recognized research library offering advanced scholarly programs in the humanities; a national leader in how Shakespeare is taught in grades K-12; and an award-winning producer of cultural and arts programs - theater, music, poetry, exhibits, lectures, and family programs. The Library's collections include rare printed books, manuscripts, works of art, audiovisual materials, and modern scholarship. Education/Skills:

B.A. degree required, preferably in the humanities. ALA-accredited master's degree in library or information science or studies required (will consider applicants nearing completion of degree). Demonstrated ability to participate in team projects and to follow technical instructions required. Cataloging facility in European languages other than English preferred. Ability to resolve bibliographical problems preferred. Must work with accuracy and attention to detail. Good computer skills required. Background or interest in Shakespeare's plays and illustrations helpful.

 

Experience:

Online cataloging experience required. Knowledge of AACR2, DCRM(B), LC subject headings, MARC 21 formats, and NACO procedures strongly preferred. Working experience with OCLC strongly preferred. Working experience with Voyager desirable.

 

Working Conditions:

35-hour work week. The position requires the ability to work at a computer for an extended period of time, lift and carry heavy books (up to 20 lbs.), push fully loaded book trucks, and climb ladders.

Under the supervision of the Head of Cataloging and in general consultation with the Shakespeare Collection project team, functions as cataloger for pre-1831 materials in the collection of printed editions of the works of William Shakespeare.

 

§  Creates and upgrades full DCRM(B) MARC 21 descriptive cataloging records for pre-1831 printed editions of works by William Shakespeare.

§  Assigns subject and form headings based on LC standards and Folger practice.

§  Establishes and revises name headings in the LC/NACO authority file according to NACO policies and Folger procedures.

§  Consults with Curators and Conservators on candidate volumes for mass deacidification or phase boxing.

§  Documents project procedures and policies on departmental wiki.

§  Participates in ongoing planning and assessment of project progress and workflow.

§  Other duties as assigned.

 

Benefits:
