ESTC Outage

The British Library is continuing to experience a major technology outage as a result of a ransomware cyber-attack. The outage is affecting the British Library website, online systems and services including the English Short Title Catalogue (estc.bl.uk), as well as some onsite services.

The British Library anticipates restoring more services in the next few weeks, but some disruption to certain services is expected to persist for several months. The ESTC is not likely to be accessible for some time. Updates and information are posted at https://www.bl.uk/ and the British Library blog: https://blogs.bl.uk/living-knowledge/

There are a couple of resources that might help to fill in for the ESTC, at least partially, while the full dataset is inaccessible. Some years ago we provided pre-1701 records to the Print and Probability project http://printprobability.org/ for research purposes. They have made those roughly 150,000 records fully searchable at https://estc.printprobability.org/. For the 18th century, 'Eighteenth Century Collections Online' (ECCO) uses ESTC records for its bibliographic information. ECCO is a commercial resource and contains only a subset of 18th-century records in the ESTC. In addition, both of these datasets are many years old and do not contain all the bibliographic information found in the full ESTC records.

If you'd like to contact us, you can reach the ESTC at the British Library at estc at bl.uk<mailto:estc at bl.uk> and the ESTC North America at cbsrinfo at ucr.edu<mailto:cbsrinfo at ucr.edu>.

We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience caused and thank you for your patience and understanding.
