[DCRM-L] Question about a unique binding/structure

Hi Ashley,

At first glance it seems like an attempt to made a dos-a-dos binding where one wasn't really originally intended?

We see lots of Books of Common Prayer like this at Lambeth - it was very common (at least in the C of E tradition) to issue the BCP along with Hymns Ancient and Modern or the Psalter. I've recently had a 'handbag' BCP come across my desk, where two different imprints of the BCP and Hymns Ancient and Modern both fit in a little leather carrying case with a beaded handle, not unlike a purse.

We catalogue them as two separate items (and with your separate imprint that decision is made for you anyway!) but these kind of 19th century paired BCP + other publication in a bespoke binding situation seem fairly normal to me.

Hope that helps!

All best,

Julia

Hi Ashley,

I feel that I have seen something like this before, but where I couldn't tell you. Could it be a variation on a "pocket book"?

Here are some links that may support my theory:

Hi Deborah,
Yes, each binding functions independently. They are two separate volumes that may have been purchased at different times due to varying imprint dates.

I've never seen anything like this, either. But then I don't have a lot of contact with post -1830 books. Is each binding completely functional on its own? ???

Subject: [DCRM-L] Question about a unique binding/structure

Good morning all, and apologies for any duplication--

I've come across a unique book structure that I was hoping for some insight on. The catalog record for the book in question is here: https://utah-primoprod.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/f/1rn6k8i/UUU_ALMA21265423680002001<https://url.us.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/o26yCkRjqgtKzKLf2kPaa?domain=utah-primoprod.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com>

It is a miniature book of common prayer that is ?bound-with? a book of hymnals?but they are actually two separate volumes with their own bindings. The first book has a pocket on the back cover where you?re supposed to slide the cover of the second book in and combine them, once you?ve got both. I?ve never seen something like this; is there a term for this style? I?ve attached a few pictures via a dropbox folder link below:

Many thanks in advance for your insights!
