Dear Leslie--

I hope you'll indulge me with another comment. I notice that the
proposed rule changes include requiring that Roman numerals be recorded in the
260 field as Roman numerals, while DCRB says to record them as Arabic numerals,
and to add a note indicating that they are recorded as Roman nuerals. I'ld be
careful about this. I don't know whether search engines determine date based on
what's in the fixed fields, or on what's in the 260 field. If the latter, to
make this change would be to introduce a barrier to accessing all the records
for a particular date, assuming the programs read Arabic numerals as numbers and
letters as letters. In any case, the current standard adds a note indicating
that the date is recorded in the piece in Arabic numerals. It seems to me that
this should be sufficient.
