The standard alternative to using superscripts is put a descriptive
phrase in square brackets, e.g., A-O[superscript 8]. This is the
procedure for any symbol or text that one cannot enter into a record.

The University of Notre Dame catalog is an Aleph system and we can use
superscripts. I am not familiar with SIRSI. Do you know whether it is
just a font problem? We use Lucida Sans Unicode for super- and
subscripts because it gives the best and most uniform display. Tahoma
is too small, and even Arial Unicode MS font does not include all of
the super and subscripts while Lucida Sans has a complete range. We
have the option in the Aleph system of choosing fonts for particular
ranges of Unicode values. Is that possible for SIRSI?

I hope this helps you somewhat.
