<font size=3>Hmmm... An incunable. Tough little so-and-so's from the
point of view of format. Once I started encountering what seemed to be
quartos in 6s (of the 1490s), I began to twig to the fact that, the
standard impositions not having become absolutely routine, I must be
looking at folios, printed on small formes at one pull. That's made me
cautious. You may have more experience than I have with these little
animals. I wonder what Paul Needham would say...<br><br>

assuming that they were printed as sheets of vellum on type imposed in
the normal manner, as is generally the case, I believe. As with 19th-c.
books on wove paper, it can be hard to determine what the imposition
was--the imposition being the basis of format. My impression is that
whole skins would be approximately the same size as the most common paper
sizes, so that one can infer the format from the finished size and
proportions after folding; but I have little experience in interpeting
the evidence of format in vellum printing. I think this might be better
as an exlilbris-l query, and perhaps even better book_arts-l, to cast a
wider net.<br>
