Another picture that looks more like the book I'm dealing with is
at:<br><br>
<a href="http://www.alcuinbooks.com/catalogweb2_files/blondel.JPG" eudora="autourl">
http://www.alcuinbooks.com/catalogweb2_files/blondel.JPG</a><br><br>
And here is a quote from an e-mail in the archives of the book_arts-l
list: <br><br>
"<tt>Cat's Paw decoration was simply done with the appropriate
colored calf - light, yellow or red-based tan - a cut out sponge (sea
sponge), and copperas (ferrous sulfate). The sponge is loaded with
copperas, and then simply applied in some sort of symmetrical
pattern.<br><br>
The calf -originally colored with a slow build up of color with salts -
would have been prepared in a similar manner to marbling (see Zaensdorf)
less the second paste wash and coat of glair, I think.</tt> "

And here's a definition from Etherington & Roberts, Bookbinding and
the Conservation of Books:<br><br>
<h1><font size=2><b>cat's paw calf</b></font></h1>An acid-stain pattern
on a calfskin binding, somewhat resembling the paw marks of a cat.
<br><br>
<br>
So it sounds like the technique that produced the kind of pattern that's
on "my" book is not exactly marbling, but a cousin of
it.<br><br>
A bit of Friday afternoon trivia,<br><br>

<blockquote type=cite class=cite cite="">Thanks, Eric! I don't have ready
access to a digital camera, but the book I mentioned basically looks as
if somebody's cat had walked across it after dipping his paws in ink.
Since the Web site refers to the result as cat's paw marbling, I guess
that answers the question of what kind of calf binding to call it, namely
marbled.<br><br>
Cheers,<br><br>

and post the pic? I don't know what a<br>
cat's-paw binding is.<br><br>

Subject: [DCRM-L] Another question: cat's-paw calf binding<br><br>
Another question about bindings: I just cataloged a bound manuscript
<br>
with a cat's-paw calf binding. Is this covered by any of the existing
<br>
terms for calf bindings in Binding Terms? The narrow terms under <br>
"Calf bindings" give these choices:<br><br>
Marbled calf bindings<br>
Mottled calf bindings<br>
Sprinkled calf bindings<br>
Stained calf bindings<br><br>
Would a binding with a cat's-paw pattern be considered mottled?<br><br>
Thanks for any thoughts,<br><br>
