POSITION: <b>Manuscripts Cataloger</b><br>
<br>
HIRING RANGE: Assistant Librarian I - Associate Librarian I ($46,164 -
$48,029 per annum). Salary and appointment level based on experience
and qualifications.<br>
<br>
The Bancroft Library of the University of California, Berkeley seeks an
enthusiastic and collaborative professional librarian skilled in both
collection-level and item-level cataloging to serve as Manuscripts
Cataloger. This is a full-time, career-track appointment.<br>

THE ENVIRONMENT<br>
<br>
The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally
renowned research and teaching facility at one of the nation’s premiere
public universities, serving 23,000 undergraduates, 9,000 graduate
students, and 1,500 faculty members. Current collections include
approximately 10 million volumes and 56,000 current serial titles.
Library facilities on the Berkeley campus include the Doe/Moffitt
Libraries, The Bancroft Library, the East Asian Library, and more than
20 additional libraries that serve specific subject areas and the
professional schools. The Library is a member of the Center for
Research Libraries (CRL), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL),
Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), and the Research Libraries Group
(RLG), and is an active participant in the California Digital Library.
The Library has a budget of $35 million and employs about 375 full-time
staff and more than 600 part-time students.
<p class="style11">The Bancroft Library at the University of
California, Berkeley, is one of the largest and most heavily used
libraries of manuscripts, rare books, and special collections in the
United States. As the primary center of special collections within the
library system at Berkeley, Bancroft supports major research and
reference activities and plays a leading role in the development of
research collections. Bancroft holdings include over 600,000 volumes,
55,000 linear feet of manuscripts, 8,000,000 photographs and other
pictorial materials, 72,000 microforms, and 23,000 maps. Additional

<p class="style11">RESPONSIBILITIES<br>
</p>
<p class="style11">Under the general direction of the Principal
Cataloger, the incumbent serves as primary original cataloger of
manuscripts and archival collections for The Bancroft Library and has
direct responsibility for the creation and maintenance of all MARC 21
catalog records for manuscripts and archival collections, both at the
item and collection levels. A member of the Cataloging Unit, the
incumbent collaborates closely with all other units in the Bancroft
Technical Services Department, especially Archival Processing and
Acquisitions. The incumbent provides technical processing
(accessioning, preservation, arrangement, and description) and serves
as the library’s expert on descriptive standards for manuscripts and
archival materials. The incumbent provides reference and instructional
services to library users. The incumbent develops cataloging
initiatives and standards related to manuscripts and collaborates with
library and other Berkeley colleagues in cataloging projects, serving
as the de facto campus-wide manuscripts cataloging expert, routinely
consulting with other library units on the cataloging and processing of
manuscript materials.

<p class="style11">The incumbent assists in the preparation of grant
proposals and reports and participates in library-wide initiatives,
task forces, and committees.<br>
</p>
<p class="style11">QUALIFICATIONS<br>
</p>
<p class="style11">Work experience using national standards for
archival description, such
as Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS), Archives, Personal
Papers, and Manuscripts (APPM), and Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules,
2nd Edition (AACR2), is a requirement of the position. The successful
candidate will have demonstrated skills in original cataloging of a
wide variety of manuscripts, knowledge of arrangement and description
of archival materials, excellent written and oral communication skills,
strong project management skills, and demonstrated proficiency at
meeting goals and deadlines.<br>
</p>
<p class="style11">Required:<br>
</p>
<ul class="style11">
<li>Master’s Degree in Library or Information
Science from an ALA-accredited institution, OR equivalent degree, with
a specialization in archival studies.</li>
<li>Minimum 1-2 years experience working with modern manuscripts with
an emphasis on cataloging and processing.</li>
<li>Demonstrated
understanding of the principles of cataloging, arrangement, and
description of manuscript and archival collections. </li>
<li>Experience
providing original MARC 21 cataloging of books and manuscripts using
AACR2, LCSH, LC classification, DACS and/or APPM.
</li>
<li>Knowledge and experience with MARC data elements.</li>
<li>Experience with automated databases, especially OCLC Connexion.</li>
<li>Excellent written and oral communication skills.</li>
<li>Excellent organizational, time, and project management skills.</li>
</ul>
Preferred:<br>
<ul class="style11">
<li>Reference experience in an archives or manuscripts repository.
</li>
<li>Undergraduate degree in history (especially US or Western US
history).
</li>
<li>Reading-level knowledge of a Western European language,
preferably Spanish.
</li>
<li>Familiarity with Encoded Archival Description.
</li>
<li>Knowledge of conservation needs of paper-based documents.
</li>
</ul>

academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining
agent, University Council – American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT).
This position is in the bargaining unit.</p>
