<p class=MsoPlainText>Deborah,<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoPlainText><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoPlainText>Yes, the actual evidence of DCRB Core usage that I
reported in a second article (LRTS 50, no. 1 (January 2006): 42-57) was that
between implementation of the DCRB Core standard in 1999 and the middle of
2003, only 224 DCRB Core records were found in both RLIN and OCLC. They
were created by 13 libraries, but the bulk were created by four
libraries. Some were BIBCO records and others were not. The first
article that Jain cited was based on a questionnaire that I sent to ARL
libraries seeking information about their use and perception of the DCRB Core
record. While few of the respondents indicated that they had used the
DCRB Core record, some were looking for appropriate collections with which to
employ the standard.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoPlainText><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoPlainText>I remember that I read Appendix C during the close
readings of one of the versions of DCRM(B) and I finally located in an old
email folder what I sent you in April 2005: “I have taken a look at the
draft of Appendix C and find that the guidelines for the elements of the
DCRM(B) Core standard reflect accurately the BIBCO core-level standards for
books and rare books and the National Level Record standard. I see that
the editorial committee has carefully made the distinction between records submitted
as BIBCO records and those that are not. It is good to have the reminder
that a BIBCO record must have headings supported by national-level authority
records placed in several appropriate locations in the DCRM(B) Core guidelines,
i.e. in the 1XX and 7XX fields.”<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoPlainText><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoPlainText>I think no one has responded to your question of whether
they are using DCRM(B) Core or DCRB Core. I have not used the Core standard
in my cataloging.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class=MsoPlainText><span style='font-family:"Californian FB","serif";
color:#002060'>Hi, Deborah,<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoPlainText><span style='font-family:"Californian FB","serif";
color:#002060'> Well, of course, the Rare Book Core is given as
Appendix C in DCRM(B). Now I hadn't noticed this earlier (or I would have said
something), but it looks to me as if someone took the requirements of <i>DCRB
Core</i> and spelled them out, field-by-field, in that Appendix. However, in
doing so, they changed all the "DCRB" designations to
"DCRM(B)". At least, I hope they used the <i>exact</i> requirements
as approved by PCC and RBMS/BSC and didn’t change them. Because, only DCRB
was approved to be used as the basis for the “Rare Book Core”
record. Still, Bob and I (who were on the original Joint Task Group) believe
there is complete compatibility between the 2 eds., with respect to the
“core” requirements. When DCRM(B) was going through its revision,
we felt it would probably only be a matter of getting DCRM(B) approved as the
basis of the “Rare Book Core” and that we (BSC) should move on
it. Unfortunately, this BRS initiative has probably taken this next
step out of our hands. Word is that “they” (won’t name names)
want no more “core” records, so everyone’s either going to
have to come up with a BRS or opt out entirely. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
