the leaves of the whole resulting affair are referred to as T(*T1), T(*T2),
T(*T3), T(*T4), T2, T3 etc.</font></p>

the first leaf of which is signed T2. There are two T2’s in the gathering, the one following cancellans T1 and the original T2 following all four inserted leaves. <u></u><u></u></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">I was taught at Rare Book School to follow Fredson Bowers’ notation, and I’ve been trying to figure out how to do it in this case. I’m stumped after looking over pages 243-49 for quite awhile (that’s 5<sup>th</sup> printing, 1998). Essentially,
this is a leaf replaced by a fold, within which another fold has been inserted. Page 249 comes close to telling me what to do, but I’m just not sure I have it right. This is my tentative idea: T⁸ (-T1+*T,'T2'.1,chi1). The cancellans T1 is signed ‘*T’. I didn’t
use the simultaneous plus and minus sign because, as Bowers says, this isn’t the replacement of one leaf with another leaf or of one fold with another fold.
