<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Constantia","serif"">Hello, Deborah, et al. As Jim Green mentioned, a few years back I did have a bit of fun figuring out the imposition of a book I had in hand that appeared to be an 18mo in 9s. I created a
pdf, which I attach here. If you want to try it for yourself, print the first two pages only, in duplex, opening to the left or along the long edge. Cut on the solid lines, fold on the dotted, and you end up with two copies of Signature A. There will be
two singletons of A5 which can go with either copy. I have used some dotted notation to indicate which leaves constitute one signature versus the other, so that I could be sure I was replicating how my book appeared</span><span style="font-family:"Constantia","serif"">
(that book being Rufus W. Adams’ <i>Young Gentleman and Lady's Explanatory Monitor</i>. Columbus: E. Griswold, Jun., 1818.) It did work, deckle edges being where I wanted them, etc.

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Georgia","serif"">We're cataloging an 1825 Boston imprint of William Bellamy, Select comedies from Shakspeare, which is gathered in 9's throughout. Our deteriorating copy with uncut leaves have helped us determine
that the singleton is inserted after the 4th leaf of each gathering. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Georgia","serif"">I've long known about the existence of gatherings in 9's--and give it as the one exception to prohibition against signature statements with a superscript odd number--and am pretty sure I even
handled one at the Library Company, but can't track down documentation on it. The ExLibris-L archives are down so I can't search there. I seem to remember it as a Philadelphia German thing. Before we put down the signatures as A-L^9, though, it would be nice
to have confirmation that this formulation is legit. As for identifying the format, Jaggard (Shakespeare bibliography) calls it a 12mo but I'm inclined to call it an 8vo. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
