<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Georgia","serif";color:#1F497D">There has been a little discussion on the DCRM Steering Group (DSG) wiki about the DCRM(MSS) statement on using bracketing devised titles in manuscripts, but we were expecting a
lot more, given that this is an important topic with far-reaching consequences for all the constituent manuals. It looks like our plan to carry out the discussion on the wiki has inhibited the kind of discussion and debate the issue deserves. The three commenters
will re-post here on DCRM-L to kick off the discussion in what is, now that I think about it, quite more appropriate venue for community-wide discussions.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<b>Subject:</b> To bracket or not in cataloging manuscripts <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Georgia","serif"">Dear DCRM-L Community,<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Georgia","serif""><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Georgia","serif"">Some months ago, Manon Théroux put together a chart on how the different DCRM manuals treat manuscript material, which revealed a number of important differences between the manuals, especially
in comparison to DCRM(MSS). The most prominent is whether to use square brackets when supplying text in a transcription field (areas 1, 2, 4, and 6). Traditionally, catalogs of manuscripts and archival collections do not bracket supplied information. Since
a basic principle of DCRM construction is not to deviate from AACR2 unless there's a rare material reason to depart, or from the already-published DCRM manuals unless there's a format-specific reason to depart, the DCRM Steering Group asked the DCRM(MSS) editorial
group to justify the format-specific reason for departing from bracketing in transcription fields.
