<div>From a systems point of view, I think the 007 should be required for everything always. The 007/00 would be much more useful in SQL queries and other programming if it always had data, and it's an easy thing to set defaults for it in a cataloging template
for rare materials.</div>

<div>I’m quite sure it was not the intent of the group that added the rare provisions to the BSR to require 007 in all rare material records. As far as I remember we never discussed the issue at all.</div>

<div>I note the main instruction to this section (p. 18) says “Use as many 006 and 007 fields as are appropriate for the resource.” Since the fields are not needed for most rare materials, I would think this general instruction would mean they aren’t required.
I assume their presence in each of the format sections is a place holder just in case they’re needed. They aren’t needed for archival records, either, are they? Or notated music—are we required to include an 007 in a record for a score? The score records I’ve
seen don’t routinely include 007.</div>

<div>SCS is bringing out a new version of the BSR in order to bring in rare materials elements from the dcrmg and dcrmm. During the review process we may be modifying slightly the instructions in the BSR re the 007 field.</div>
