<div>Many of you will know that the Mann citation is awarded by ALCTS each year to a distinguished member of the cataloging and tech services community. It's the most prominent award of its kind, and chances are that the true notables that come to your mind
are on the roster of past winners.</div>

<div>This year's honoree is Sarah Shatford Layne, who retired from UCLA last June after about 30 years of service in cataloging, most recently as principal cataloger (how many research libraries even HAVE such a position anymore?). I'm writing to DCRM because
Sarah began her career as a rare book cataloger at the Morgan Library, and so I've always considered her to be "one of us." Some of you may know her best for her utterly seminal article on levels of representation in cataloging of images, which was based
on her UCLA thesis. If you haven't read it, have a look!</div>

As a proud grad of UCLA's library school, I'm compelled to point out that UCLA may well have the longest list of Mann citation winners of any institution out there. In addition to Sarah and Martha Yee, our beloved cataloging professor Betty Baughman is on the
list, as are other former professors such as Elaine Svenonius and Seymour Lubetzky. Other UCLA folks include Barbara Tillett and Dorothy McGarry.

<div>Huzzah for UCLA's lamazing legacy of cataloging scholarship, and especially for Sarah! She'll receive her award at the ALCTS award ceremony on the Saturday of ALA weekend in Las Vegas. Come and cheer her on!</div>
