If you are suggesting creating separate records for every copy of pre-1829 (or for that matter pre-1800 or even pre-1501) items, please do NOT do this. The same rule applies in OCLC to rare as to general materials: one record per manifestation (per language
of cataloging). Rare materials are afforded some leeway in the definition of "manifestation"--we can create separate records for separate states, including separate printings, but NOT for separate copies, however unique (e.g. signed by Abraham Lincoln) our
copy may be.</div>

Note, this announcement is simply an announcement that OCLC has revised its automated duplicate detection/merge program so that it won't touch anything with a publication date before 1830 (the previous date was 1800); it also won't touch anything coded with
a rare materials cataloging code in 040, including post-1829 materials if so coded. Of related interest, this list has been following the progress of a group (of which I am a member) working out policies and procedures for manual merging of duplicate rare
materials records in Connexion. The document for books is complete (but I can't find it posted on OCLC's policies pages yet); we're currently working on scores, maps, and graphic materials.</div>

<div>This has me wondering. For those of us that want to bring out the uniqueness of our individual copies, should we approach all pre-1829 items as if we're back to RLIN, where each item gets its own record because of its distinctiveness? (Presumably if
we have an item that does not appear to be distinctive we can simply cluster it to a similar item.) Or could we simply copy catalog and add $5 [library code] to our distinctive features? I'm sorry I can't recall someone's statement that
<b>all publications </b>before a certain date should be considered unique (certainily 1501), but if not 1829, how much earlier?</div>

Association (ALA), the demarcation date for the infrequent automated merging of duplicate records for older materials has been changed. DDR processing now exempts all bibliographic records with dates of production/publication up to and including 1829. Previously,
the demarcation had been records with dates of production/publication earlier than 1800. For cartographic materials, DDR continues to exempt records with dates of publication earlier than 1901, as determined in consultation with ALA’s Map and Geospatial Information
Round Table (MAGIRT) Cataloging and Classification Committee (CCC).
