Interesting issue. Allow me to take issue 🙂 with Michelle's suggestion to add $5 to the end of your 500 note. When an imperfect copy is used as the basis for a description because there is no reliable information about a perfect copy, a note on the basis of
the description is a <i>general </i>note, not a copy-specific or local note. </div>

No matter that the description is based on a particular institution's copy—it is the exemplar of that edition/issue upon which the description is based, and therefore applies to the entire description, not an institution's deviation from it. </div>

As a practical matter, many institutions automatically delete fields with a $5 for a different institution. (An entirely prudent measure in my opinion.) Adding a $5 to a general note may result in the loss of significant information. </div>

<p class="x_xmsonormal">That doesn’t exactly cover the situation where you’re not sure whether it’s incomplete or not, but I think you could handle that in a 500 note in conjunction with adding (incomplete) to the 300.</p>

<p><span style="font-family:Aptos; color:black">We’re creating an original record for a cookbook. The copy is a spiral-bound volume with considerable damage. The back cover is missing and several of the leaves at the end are partly torn from the spiral binding.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family:Aptos; color:black">The last leaf in this copy has a verso with page number 248 and is a section for the reader to add handwritten notes. It’s not clear if this is actually the last leave of the original publication or if other leaves

<p><span style="font-family:Aptos; color:black">Does anyone have any recommendations regarding how to handle the 300 $a and 5XX fields to show that the cataloger was unsure if they had a complete copy in hand?</span></p>
