<div dir="ltr">As the RBMS liaison to the MARC Advisory Committee (MAC), I'm adding the definition of $5 in field 340 to my ongoing list of MARC desiderata. This might fit in with an existing idea for a discussion paper that would seek to make field 340 more manuscript-friendly.<div><br></div><div>Another related item under consideration is the possibility of revising the definition of $3 (<span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:Times;font-size:medium;text-align:justify">Part of the described materials to which the field applies)</span> across the MARC formats, to more explicitly include things that aren't "parts" per se, including copy/call number indications, as in some of the examples others have mentioned in this thread. </div><div><br></div><div>If anyone reading is interested in helping develop either of these discussion paper ideas, let me know and I can share in-progress drafts. MARC field, while still indicating that the term is specific to your copy. So you have multiple options

<p class="MsoNormal">I also get excited by fore-edge paintings on rare books. It is my understanding, though I am still kind of a newbie in regards to rare book cataloging, that some of the copies may not have the painting. So the catalogers who used that record
