Dear colleagues:

We am seeking volunteers for a joint CC:DA/RBMS Bibliographic Standards Task Force on Rules for Early Printed Monographs (AACR 2.12-18). This task force will be chaired by Robert Maxwell and will make recommendations on the disposition of the special rules at the end of chapter 2 on rare printed monographs. We are looking for task force members who together represent a variety of practice in cataloging early printed monographs: those who use DCRB, those who use AACR2, including those who use the main part of chapter 2 and those who use chapter 2 rules 12-18; those who use ISBD(A) or other non-AACR rules.

Interested persons should communicate their interest to the chair of the RBMS Bibliographic Standards Committee (contact information below). Please indicate your own experience in cataloging rare printed monographs, which source of rules used, and whether you are a member of ALCTS and/or ACRL.

Here is the Task Force's charge:

The Task Force on Rules for Early Printed Monographs is charged to investigate the use of the rules for early printed monographs in chapter 2 of AACR2 and to present in its final report answers to the four major questions posed in CC:DA/Attig/2003/4
(http://www.libraries.psu.edu/tas/jca/ccda/docs/attig4.pdf):

1. Are the special rules needed in AACR?
2. If so, what should be the scope of the rules?
3. Should such rules conform to either DCRM(B) or ISBD(A)?
4. What principles should inform such rules?

The Task Force will submit its final report to CC:DA and the RBMS Bibliographic Standards Committee one month prior to the ALA Midwinter Meeting in 2005.
