[DCRM-L] Format for vellum?

Thanks, Richard; that's what I was leaning toward, but wanted it
confirmed. This is a French incunable; signing and conjugacy, along with
size and shape, point to 8vo imposition.

Absolutely, assuming that they were printed as sheets of vellum on type
imposed in the normal manner, as is generally the case, I believe. As
with 19th-c. books on wove paper, it can be hard to determine what the
imposition was--the imposition being the basis of format. My impression
is that whole skins would be approximately the same size as the most
common paper sizes, so that one can infer the format from the finished
size and proportions after folding; but I have little experience in
interpeting the evidence of format in vellum printing. I think this
might be better as an exlilbris-l query, and perhaps even better
book_arts-l, to cast a wider net.

Do books printed on vellum, properly speaking, have bibliographical
format?
