RARE BOOK SCHOOL

Rare Book School (RBS) is pleased to announce its 2010 course offerings.  Each year, RBS offers about 25 five-day, non-credit courses for students from all disciplines and levels to study the history of written, printed, and born digital materials with leading scholars and professionals in the field.  Particularly of interest to subscribers of this list might be:

Rare Book Cataloging
taught by Deborah J. Leslie

2 sessions: 12-16 July 2010, 26-30 July 2010
at the University of Virginia

Aimed at catalog librarians who find that their present duties include (or shortly will include) the cataloging of printed, monographic rare books. Attention will be given primarily to cataloging books from the hand-press period, with some discussion on 19th and 20th century books in a special collections context. Topics include:
. application of codes and standards, especially DCRM(B)
. introduction to format, collation, and illustration types
. concepts of edition, impression, issue, state
. uses of special files
. setting cataloging policy within an institutional context
This course is restricted to working catalogers experienced in AACR2, MARC21, and general cataloging principles and practices. No knowledge of early books is necessary. The goal of the course is to provide practice in each of the primary elements of the rare book catalog record, so that students will be equipped to begin cataloging their institution's rare books.
Requirements: In their personal statement, applicants should describe their experience with machine-readable AACR2 cataloging and provide a brief description of the types and date range of materials they expect to catalog with DCRM(B). In addition, applicants are required to submit 1-3 typical bibliographic records of materials they currently are cataloging, preferably original cataloging of modern books or serials.

About RBS:
Rare Book School (RBS) offers week-long continuing-education opportunities for students from all disciplines and levels to study the history of written, printed, and born digital materials with leading scholars and professionals in the field. For a complete list of summer courses, see the Course Schedule page on our website.  Admission to courses is competitive. RBS faculty members make their first round of admission decisions exactly three months before their courses begin.  After this, RBS faculty review applications as they are received.

NB: RBS accepts applications until the week the course runs, but chances of admission are greatly increased if an application is received two weeks ahead of the first round of admission decisions, i.e. three and half months before the course begins.
To apply to a course, please visit our Applications page, where you can download an application form.
