Here¹s some good news: LC policy for applying RDA permits catalogers to
supply bracketed edition statements. Many thanks to my OCLC colleagues for
bringing this to my attention.

Subject: RDA Follow-up to "Cataloging Defensively" Webinar

As a follow-up to the Webinar ³Cataloging Defensively: ŒWhen to Input a New
Record¹ in the Age of DDR,² presented on October 28th and November 1st, I
wanted to inform registrants of some clarifying information that was unknown
to me at the time of the presentation. Thanks to Dave Reser of the Library
of Congress for bringing this to our attention.

Although it is true that Resource Description and Access (RDA) proper does
not allow for a cataloger-supplied edition statement in the sort of
situation that AACR2 1.2B4 and its LCRI account for, the RDA Library of
Congress Policy Statement 2.5.1.4 is an almost exact restatement of AACR2
1.2B4, providing for a cataloger-supplied edition statement: ³LCPS for
2.5.1.4: Recording Edition Statements: If a resource lacks an edition
statement but it is known to contain significant changes from other
editions, supply a brief statement in the language and script of the title
proper and enclose it in square brackets.² LC Policy Statements (LCPSs) are
the RDA parallels to AACR2 LC Rule Interpretations (LCRIs).
