I am cataloging an 18th-19th century copy of a 16th c. German set of prints illustrating a procession; it is comprised of 13 sheets that are joined together (approx. 19 x 531 inches in size). It is currently rolled on a wooden spool. The auction catalog for the item only uses term "roll" to describe it. Other documents in reference to it use term " scroll." Is there a clear distinction between the 2 terms? AAT and Grove Art associate the term "scroll" with Asian works only. Grove Art refers the reader to article "Roll" for the Western tradition of scrolls. But the general (?) use of the term "scroll" for the Ripley scroll seems to contradict this Westerm/Eastern distinction. In WorldCat, one record for a similar item uses the term "roll" in 300, and "scroll" in 500/520 notes. Does one term refer more to physical format, the other function?Thank you for sharing any thoughts on the usage of these terms.Karen
