[DCRM-L] Fwd: question about dcrm (B) rule 7b9 signatures

She sent me the same query, and I've answered her. Superscript numerals, if they cannot be reproduced, have to be described in square brackets, just as do any other characters that cannot be reproduced.

 

[A][superscript 8] B-C[superscript 4]  

 

and so on. I did tell her that superscript odd numbers were incorrect.

Mr. Attig, 

I'm working cataloging rare books and the library will use Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (Books) (DCRM(B)).
My question is:
in the rule 7b9 the signatures, put superindice at numbers, for example: [A]³ B-C² D¹ 1-8² 
but in the library we use CDS/ISIS and just admit ascii code only until alt+255, and we can't to write numbers like superindice 4 or 6 or 8.

We see that some libraries had use *. For example: [A]3 B-C2 D1 1-8*2

Is correct to use this notation form? or, there is another way to write the notation for signatures?
