[DCRM-L] Latin abbreviations and RDA

Oh yes. (Does the word "condescension" come to mind?)

I've been trying in my own cataloging, and writing in general, to use "that is" or "for example" instead of "i.e." or "e.g." Even many educated people--including educated catalogers!--don't have enough of a handle in this post-Latinate, post-advanced-language-instruction culture, on the meaning of and difference between them. 

On the other hand, you'll have to pry my "viz." from my dead, cold hands. (-;

But if the audience for the cataloging code is understood to be able to comprehend the abbreviation, and the audience for the catalog record is not, does it still constitute irony?
