[DCRM-L] Use and naming of the HBCN (was RE: Cataloging Rates for Graphics)

Credit where credit is due: Helena Zinkham (at the Library of Congress) taught us the usefulness of this kind of cautionary note; Bettina Smith (now at Smithsonian Archives of American Art) came up with the name and acronym when upgrading recon records at the Folger in 2006 or so (as in, "Is it okay if I delete the HBCN from this one now?").

I agree! The note probably has wide applicability, too, both within and beyond the cataloging community (just think how useful it could be in politics, for instance).

Eeek! Quick follow-up to Maria's post script: the Celebriducks records in Hamnet are (at the moment) just preliminary accession records, as is the record for the William Shakespeare action figure . They've just now been updated to reflect our current practice, where the template used by the Acquisitions Dept. automatically generates an HBCN ("Handy Butt-Cover Note") reading "This record represents material that has not yet been cataloged. It may contain incorrect or incomplete information. Please consult Curator for assistance."
