Dear Fellow Cataloging Enthusiasts,

Turns out the folks at Zepheira were so impressed (and intrigued) by RBMS's interest in the potential power of Linked Data to "work" for special collections description that they've gone ahead and created a version of their training course specifically for Rare Books and Special Collections librarians. They also figured out a way to give us a deep discount on it. Hooray!

Background: The ball got rolling at the RBMS Preconference seminar that Eric Miller (Zepheira) and Aislinn Sotelo (UC San Diego Library) did on "Back to the Future: The Reinvention of the Library Catalog, Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow," and gained momentum when Eric Miller got together with the DCRM2 editorial team at Annual a couple of days later. Shortly after the DCRM2 meeting, I was at a small Libhub<http://www.libhub.org/> presentation by Jeff Penka of Zepheira, and gave the snowball a push myself by harping on Special Collections, linked data, and BIBFRAME. While talking with Jeff, Eric, and their colleague John Richardson after that presentation, one of them asked me something along the lines of "Hmmm... do you think there's enough interest in the Rare Books and Special Collections community that we could get a group of rare materials catalogers together to explore the promise of Linked Data and BIBFRAME with a pool of their data?" (Or, to continue the metaphor "Want to build a snowman?") "Oh yes," I replied, trying to refrain from jumping up and down and clapping my hands in excitement.

Long story short: see below for a message that John Richardson asked me to pass along to RBMS members and DCRM-L readers.

Zepheira is pleased to offer discounted online training for RBMS members and other special collections librarians, archivists and managers.

Based on the overwhelmingly positive response<http://hangingtogether.org/?p=3989> to Linked Data and the BIBFRAME model at this past RBMS Preconference<http://www.preconference14.rbms.info/?page_id=490> and the RBMS Bibliographic Standards Committee's "DCRM2" discussion at ALA, Zepheira is offering a session of its self-paced, practical practitioner training series for people specifically in the Rare Books, Manuscripts, Special Collections, and Archives fields. A group with common interests will help shape the discussions, exercise and collaboration of participants in the course.

Given the amount of interest and anticipated participation, Zepheira will be offering a 40+% discount for attendees!

Normally the per-person fee is $1,500 per seat.

For this special session, attendees will only pay $995 per seat.

When: September 12th through October 17th 2014 (self-paced, but approx. a 10-hour time commitment for course material, assignments and weekly conference call)
