A couple of years ago, RBMS and ARLIS/NA worked together on a paper concerning the measurement of dimensions for still images. This was in response to a proposal from CCC that image size/pictorial area should replace carrier size as the default method of measuring still images. For various reasons, the paper was not accepted for submission to CC:DA, but the issue was raised at CC:DA and JSC meetings. The JSC response was that work on this issue should be postponed until the Task Force on Machine Actionable Data Elements in Chapter 3 had submitted a proposal.

The Task Force has submitted a monumental paper on machine actionable data elements for extent and dimensions for consideration at the CC:DA meetings at Annual.  Obviously, the discussion will focus mainly on the big picture; but the Cataloging Advisory Committee of ARLIS/NA feels it would be an opportune time to remind CC:DA of graphic catalogers' concerns about measurement of still image dimensions, as currently worded in 3.5.3, and to volunteer to work on revisions to these instructions, if and when the overarching new framework for Chapter 3 is accepted. We would be glad to collaborate with RBMS on this.
