I guess such a rule wouldn’t be a DCRM(b) rule since it is about establishment of name headings rather than descriptive fields. I just looked in RDA and AACR2 unsuccessfully, but there is an old LCRI (“Printers” in 24.1) which says establish the firm as a corporate body in direct order if you do not find it listed in reference sources in a non-direct form. So I think Press of the Salem Gazette is probably the best you can do. You’d probably have to worry about reference sources more if it were a foreign corporate body. Though the LCRI is old (2003), it’s unlikely you’d go wrong following it.

This is a tough issue sometimes. The guidance I’ve gotten from people seemed to say the best thing is just to create a 710 in direct order: Press of the Salem Gazette. I don’t think the newspaper can be the publisher. Such headings seldom seem to be established, so you don’t find much help in the NAF. If you eventually find variety in the usage of the name and decide it does not represent an actual change in the organization’s name, it may make sense to create an authority for it. While I am in NACO, I doubt that I’ve ever actually created a national-level authority for such an organization.

Now that I think about it, I believe Deborah Leslie said there was a rule about it somewhere, but I couldn’t find it in DCRM(b) just now.

Hello all:
I am cataloging in DCRM(B) a guidebook to Salem, Massachusetts, published by Henry P. Ives in 1880, and I am seeking guidance on handling a tracing for the printer.

The printer's statement on the verso of the title-page reads: "Press of the Salem Gazette."  Would one consider the newspaper to be the printer?  If so, would it be appropriate to use the title in a 730 as an access point?  Or is there some other convention in place for a case like this?

The printer of the newspaper at that time does not appear to be named in OCLC.
