[DCRM-L] Fore-edge decoration description

My immediate thought was "spattered" but as far as I know that is not a 
technical term! sorry ... one finger and a wet toothbrush comes to mind...

Was the book ever in Italian ownership, just as a matter of interest? 
(given the colours).
