[DCRM-L] searching 510 in OCLC Connexion

To refine a bit, I mean a browsable 510 field that displays and indexes the numbers.

If I may add, a browsable indexed 510 field would also be awfully useful for bringing together in an ordered way resources in a bibliography (and for discovering which records are missing the 510 field, and for regularizing the forms per Standard Citations). We have such an index in our catalog and I don't know how much it is used by the public (it's buried and so little known) but I certainly use it for catalog maintenance all the time.

Is it still impossible to search the 510 field in Connexion? My Connexion queries suggest that this is the case, but I'd be delighted to hear that there is a hidden method that I am unaware of.

The issue was discussed on DCRM-L in 2007 (see below), but apparently OCLC was unconvinced by our appeal? Jackie, is there a strategy in 2016 that might bear more success? An indexed 510 would be awfully useful.

Hello:

I had a phone conversation yesterday with OCLC's Chris Grabenstatter. Chris informed me that 510 will be indexed in Scipio and Hand Press Books. She will resubmit a request that 510 be indexed also in WorldCat. Chris confirmed that hearing from more institutions that this would be useful to a) help convince OCLC to do this; and b) assuming they can be convinced, would help convince them to do it sooner rather than later.

During our call I made additional requests that Folger staff brought up during our Connexion training. First, according to the section "Notes (nt:)" of http://www.oclc.org/support/documentation/worldcat/searching/searchworldcatindexes/, 510 is not indexed by a Notes search. Rather than (or in addition to) indexing 510 separately, another option is to add 510 to the "nt" search. Second, I pointed out that it would be very useful if "nt" searched all 5XX fields. And finally, I asked whether "kw" might at some point index all variable fields.

Apparently the enhancement request queue is not public, and we don't have a number assigned. Avenues for submitting enhancement requests include posting to OCLC-CAT (which OCLC staff monitor); emailing to OCLC Customer Support (support at oclc.org<https://listserver.lib.byu.edu/mailman/listinfo/dcrm-l>); or emailing Chris directly at grabenst at oclc.org<https://listserver.lib.byu.edu/mailman/listinfo/dcrm-l> (although she is retiring this fall, she is not averse to getting emails related to enhancement requests).

Hope this helps.

best,

Jim.

Deborah,

Would you please send the text of the request so that I can know what I am

asking for (like what index the 510 would be in). If you could share the

number is assigned to the enhancement, that would make it easier for us to

concur. Best of luck dealing with serials folks.

I hope you are well,

Larry
