Kate,

I agree, there appears to be nothing of the sort in AMREMM. Whoever wrote RareWG/4 cited it in error (a revision is in order).

Subject: [DCRM-L] book format in AMREMM

Does AMREMM have instructions for book format/bibliographic format similar to DCRM(B) 5D1.3 (instructions on adding 4to, etc. after dimensions)?

Page 1 of RSC/RareWG/4 says in relation to the RDA term "book format," "Instructions for format are included in Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (Manuscripts), and Descriptive Cataloging of Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance, and Early Modern Manuscripts (AMREMM)." This lead me to think that I would find instructions similar to RDA 3.12 and DCRM(B) 5D1.3 in both publications.

I found the instructions in DCRM(MSS) 5D3 with the caption "format." However, the Area 5 instructions in AMREMM contain nothing like that. 7B1 is notes on "format, nature, and scope." However, the only instructions there about format are to describe the physical format of the item using designations like "Ms." or "Ms. codex." So it seems like "format" means something very different in AMREMM that in not related to the concept of "bibliographic format" in the DCRM publications. AMREMM uses "folio" as I have always understood it in the manuscripts context to mean "one of the paired leaves of a bifolium" rather than the in RDA book format meaning of folio: "A book format consisting of one or more leaves that are 1/2 of the whole sheet." Both meanings are valid, of course, but they are very different.

However, I've never used AMREMM so I might be missing an instruction. Can someone who uses AMREMM help me by either pointing me to the correct instruction or confirming that it does not contain such an instruction?
