Well, in truth, I'd probably forget to include the box height, then wish I had, then wonder if it's worth going down to the vault to measure, then eventually decide it's not worth the trouble: better to spend that mental energy working on the next uncataloged item. The cataloging police aren't going to come get me for omitting box height, and the record can always been improved later.

Thanks for posting! This is an great example of how DCRM(B) and DCRM(G) let us create records that are pretty much exactly the same except for the 300, and of why DCRM(G) is a good choice in this case. It allows the focus to rest on the pictures rather than the pagination.

It all looks good to me, except that portfolios are flat by definition (big folders, essentially), not boxes, so if these are clamshell style, you'll want to use "box" rather than "portfolio" throughout. See DCRM(G) 5C10 on providing Other physical details for containers.

I'd probably write something like this:

300 _ _ $a 302 photographs in 3 boxes : $b gelatin silver prints, black and white, in gray clamshell boxes ; $c sheets 51 x 40 cm, boxes 55 x 43 cm

DCRM(G) always requires a note on the source of title, and I like what you've written: in theory, you could simply have put "title from item" and been within bounds of the rules, but "Title from heading on the first unnumbered page in the first portfolio" is much more helpful.

Because the contents of the boxes are the same from copy to copy, and because you have number 8 of 20 in all three cases,  I'd suggest rephrasing so that the not-copy-specific parts can stand on their own. Also, for what it's worth, DCRM(G) encourages using "front" and "back" for pictures (which implies that they're meant to be seen from just the one side) rather than "recto" and "verso" (which implies two pages of a bound item, and is unfamiliar vocabulary for many picture researchers).

For example:

500 __ $a Box 1: 95 portraits (65 signed by the subject in ink in the image, 61 of these additionally signed by the subject in pencil on the back); boxes 2 and 3: planes, plane ruins, air shows, etc.
500 __ $a Printed in an edition of 20 copies.
500 __ $a Number 8 of the edition. $5 TxU-DA

Technically, you'd only need "Edition of 20" for the note, but "Printed in an edition of 20 copies" will help let people know that you know that "edition" in picture printing isn't the same thing as "edition" in book printing (though I'd like to hope no one would see "Edition of 20" and assume that those words are actually printed on the title page, the same way a book might explicitly say "Third edition" or "Abridged edition").

Hello all,

My institution received a donation of 302 photographs taken by Bob Seidemann that are divided into 3 boxes. The first box consists of 95 portraits, 65 of which are signed by the subject. The second and third portfolios contain photographs of planes, plane ruins, air shows, etc. Each photograph is dated between 1988-1999. For the 300 ǂc, I gave the size of the photographs and the size of the portfolio boxes containing the photographs but then I received guidance to use DCRM(G)’s Chapter 5 – Physical Description Area for the 300 field instead.

This is what I’ve come up with based on DCRM(G):

300 _ _ $a 302 photographs in 3 portfolios : $b gelatin silver prints, black and white, in gray boxes ; $c sheets 51 x 40 cm, portfolios 55 x 43 cm

For subfield a, I consulted DCRM(G) 5B4.1
For subfield b, I consulted DCRM(G) 5C1
For subfield c, I consulted DCRM(G) 5D4.3


Would someone look over OCLC #988611420 and send me any suggestions please? As a first-time consulter of DCRM(G) (and a new-ish cataloger), any guidance is appreciated.
