[DCRM-L] Manuscript handwriting recognition programs

Hi Andrea,

I asked a colleague at Schlesinger who has done work on OCR for manuscript collections about this, and her answer is that while there is no self service tool currently (or imminently) available, this is a very hot area of research, and there will be eventually.

I have been hearing that AI exists which can sometimes recognize art forgeries by the patterns of their brush strokes.  Is anyone aware of similar work in the area of handwriting recognition?  I dream of the day when I can feed an unidentified (or more frequently, illegible) handwriting sample into a computer and receive some suggestions!
