*Dear colleagues:The Controlled Vocabularies Editorial Group presented a
newly defined scope of work at the Bibliographic Standards Committee
meeting at the ALA Annual meeting. We would now like to solicit community
feedback on this important Controlled Vocabularies initiative.Informed by
the results of our recent usage survey (attached) and directing our ongoing
reorganization and integration efforts, the guiding principles used in
developing the scope statement are: - The Controlled Vocabularies should
respond to the needs of the rare materials community and should capitalize
on the community’s expertise to achieve maximum impact for the rare
materials description community of practice.- The CV should be developed in
the context of an environment with evolving technological capabilities,
companion standards, and numerous other major controlled vocabularies.- The
CV should retain relevance, longevity and consistency over time.Scope of
Work statement:The RBMS Controlled Vocabularies maintains terms specific to
the needs of the rare materials community. New terms are added at the
request of community members and vetted for inclusion by the Controlled
Vocabularies Editorial Group. General terms that are already accessible in
other major vocabularies will not be added unless a specific,
differentiating rare materials definition exists. Note: This scope applies
to the work of the CV after the vote has passed at ALA Annual 2018. It is
expected that future vocabulary editors will respect this scope, but
understood that as best practices shift the best interest of the community
and description of rare materials resources generally is paramount. Please
send feedback, comments or questions either to the list or to Ryan
Hildebrand or Amy Brown, co-editors of the Controlled Vocabularies
Editorial Group.Sincerely,Amy Brown & Ryan Hildebrand, co-editorson behalf
of the Controlled Vocabularies Editorial Group*
