The ALCTS CaMMS Cataloging Norms Interest Group is pleased to announce its
program for ALA Annual Conference held in New Orleans, LA:  Morial
Convention Center, Room 281/282, 10:30-11:30 am, Saturday, June 23, 2018.

There will be three presentations, each centered on the theme of *Cataloging
for the Future: Practical Information for Catalogers.*  The presentations
will be 15 minutes long, and there will be time for Q&A at the end of the
session.

*Where Does This Go? Cataloging Comics in Libraries*

Research group from the University of Washington iSchool

Comics, graphic novels, manga - whatever you call them, they are one of the
fastest growing sections in both public and academic libraries. Yet,
despite their popularity among librarians and users, their unique format
makes them difficult to acquire, catalog, and shelve. A team from the
University of Washington iSchool researched in collaboration with the Comic
Book Legal Defense Fund this past year.  The group is providing a best
practices document, “Comics Cataloging 101,” based on their research, for
publication on their website in June.  The presentation will cover
important information for catalogers who are unfamiliar with comics, as
well as describing the major stress points associated with adding comics to
your collection and how to navigate those potential pitfalls.

Technical Services Manager at James A. Michener Library, University of
Northern Colorado

In 2017, the University of Northern Colorado Libraries contracted with an
authority vendor to provide RDA and other enhancements to nearly one
million catalog records. One of these enhancements was the addition of URIs
in the $0 for authorized access points. While there were no plans to make
immediate use of these URIs, this enrichment was made in the belief that it
would facilitate linked data projects in the future. This presentation will
briefly review reasons for adding URIs to MARC records, but it will focus
primarily on the hurdles faced because of the added subfield, including
issues seen in local indexing, WebPac display, and even repercussions
flowing into a shared consortial catalog. The presenter will discuss how
her library resolved the URI-related issues and provide others the
information needed to make an informed decision when optimizing their own
catalogs for a linked data environment.

*User Tagging Behaviors in an OPAC: A Quantitative Analysis of 7 Years of
I-Share User Tags*

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Cultural heritage institutions have been trying to find ways to encourage
users to add tags that can be used to enhance discovery service, support
subject access, and improve metadata through tag integration. The
Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) manages
the integrated library service called I-Share that uses VuFind as its
discovery layer to serve 86 academic libraries across the state of Illinois
and consists of nearly 38 million items. The VuFind has allowed users to
add tags since 2010 to any item while logged into the system. This
presentation will share quantitative and qualitative analyses of users tags
added to the system from 2010 to 2017 (286,805 tags to 157,215 records),
and discuss how tag services can move into annotations services to further
meet users’ needs and support scholarly activities.
