All,
Please see the email below from Helen Vincent (National Library of Scotland), concerning consolidated records in the replacement to Copac. I think the same issue(s) are at least partially applicable to other environments in which records are aggregated, including (potentially) OCLC, CERL's HPB, and Casalini's SHARE-VDE project.
The RBMS Bibliographic Standards Committee may draft recommendations on the questions posed. If we do, any comments made on this list will be taken into consideration.
Thanks,
Francis

Subject: UK National Bibliographic Knowledgebase
Hello all,
I have just attended a workshop for the UK National Bibliographic Knowledgebase which is going to replace Copac https://www.jisc.ac.uk/rd/projects/national-bibliographic-knowledgebase<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.jisc.ac.uk%2Frd%2Fprojects%2Fnational-bibliographic-knowledgebase&data=02%7C01%7Cfrancis.lapka%40yale.edu%7Cc2a890709c604d71c84c08d62dfc8957%7Cdd8cbebb21394df8b4114e3e87abeb5c%7C0%7C0%7C636746960013058128&sdata=CknY5SSSJxutL4yloqJbDew%2FwgnT96zSR0SXDKqgVu0%3D&reserved=0>. One of the things they talked about was the way this will operate in terms of automated matching to create a 'consolidated' record, so for instance 10 libraries all have copies of an incunable, and the records range from retroconverted card catalogue record to ISTC download to old DCRB minimum standard to recent DCRM full standard - the matching will identify that these are all for the same item and select one of them as the 'best' from which all the others depend.
They are looking for feedback on what would be the elements of the 'best' record as the automated matching process will choose the 'best' record as the one from which all the holdings will depend. We discussed whether there is a need to differentiate between what the 'best' record for a modern general collection item would be versus the 'best' record for a rare book - for instance the matching process can identify whether a record includes subject headings and go for that above one that doesn't have them, but is this more essential than standard citations like ESTC or ISTC numbers and detailed pagination for rare books? There was also hot debate among the modern cataloguers at the workshop as to whether the 'best' record is always in RDA and if this wins out, I think there is definitely a need for a separate rare books 'best'.
You can see an example here: https://copac.jisc.ac.uk/id/20034636?style=html&title=Regum%20Neapolitanorum%20vitae%20et%20effigies<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcopac.jisc.ac.uk%2Fid%2F20034636%3Fstyle%3Dhtml%26title%3DRegum%2520Neapolitanorum%2520vitae%2520et%2520effigies&data=02%7C01%7Cfrancis.lapka%40yale.edu%7Cc2a890709c604d71c84c08d62dfc8957%7Cdd8cbebb21394df8b4114e3e87abeb5c%7C0%7C0%7C636746960013058128&sdata=uozJGlJvgwCxYjqyfAOGWejnJx3O6sRBPLOdREDuvKk%3D&reserved=0> where the 'consolidated' record has subject headings and is derived from 5 records submitted from individual libraries that can be viewed below.
They would really welcome expert opinions about this so if you would like to give feedback either individually or from the RBSC BSC, RBMS BSC, RDA Rare Materials working group, or IFLA RBSC metadata subgroup, please do so to nbk.copac at jisc.ac.uk<mailto:nbk.copac at jisc.ac.uk>. You can also ask for more information from this address if I haven't been clear. I mentioned to them that there were rare book cataloguing experts who could give better advice than I could about this so they will not be surprised if you reply. The people I was talking to were Shirley Cousins, Copac service manager, and Bethan Ruddock, NBK project manager, and the workshop was at the National Library of Scotland. I think it would be really useful for them to have some feedback that has the clout of a representative group and isn't just individual thoughts. They're clearly interested in doing right by special collections and rare books, which is always to be welcomed.
Many thanks,
Best wishes,
Helen
