[DCRM-L] multivolume sets with signatures

Good morning,
I am new to this digest. I am working on a 23 volume set of rare
books, "Description
de l'Égypte, ou, Recueil de observations et des recherches qui ont été
faites en Égypte pendant l'éxpédition de l'armée française...." The
library wants to catalog them as one bibliographic record, but each book
has it's own unique and lengthy signature, which the library wants to be
expressed within the record. What is the best way to catalog these
multivolume collections? The 505 field seems awkward to me, the field would
be so large and cumbersome. I appreciate your input.
Best,
