Agreed, I was taught to transcribe as M and D as is done in G2 and then make a note "The 'M' and 'D' in the date of publication are in apostrophic characters."

It looks to me like this is covered in DCRM(B) rule 0G1.1, where it says "Convert earlier forms of letters and diacritical marks to their modern form (see Appendix G2)." In the table in Appendix G2, the fourth row down shows the backward C used to form Roman numeral M or D.

I know this has been discussed before (many times), but I can't seem to find a rule or guideline that describes how to transcribe the backward C in Roman numeral dates.  Standard practice seems to be to record the date as: CI[backward C] for the equivalent of M and I[backward C] for D - but is there some place where this guideline is recorded?  We've looked through DCRM (Books) and DCRM (Manuscripts) and - unless I'm just overlooking it - there is no set guideline.
