This is pretty signing when books get to five or more sequences. No need to make a special note.

I would suggest adding a note after the signature statement: The first leaf in each gathering is signed "6S", "6T", etc.

Morning,

I'm sure that others will pipe up with more informed practices, but 1) good question and 2) according to Bowers, no distinction is drawn in collation between a printer's usage of Aaaaaa and 6A. Both would end up rendered 6A. You can find this in an extended note in Bowers on Chapter 5, Section 1.B.i.b "Doubled and other multiple signings." The specific bit is on p. 207 of the 2005 Oak Knoll reprint. But the entire note is worth a read to your larger point of being sensitive to typography in signatures. Earlier in the note he explicitly accepts that his approach introduces ambiguity into the collational format.

I'm not sure if others have a other practices that more granularly catch the typographic oddities in a signature.

Have a great day!

Hi all!

I've got a folio with signatures 6S-7B². That is, the first leaf in each gathering is actually signed "6S", "6T", etc., not Ssssss, Tttttt. Is there an already-established way to represent it when it's got a number and letter printed in the signature?

Thanks!
