Collecting and Its Relation to a Broad Academic Context: A&M, Case in Point
Dr. Lee Fontanella
September 30, 2021 • 2:00pm – 3:30pm, US Central
Cushing Library and Online
The talk will be recorded via Zoom. In-person attendees will be seen on Zoom.
Please join us for a talk by Professor Emeritus of Humanities and Arts, Dr. Lee Fontanella, once professor at the University of Texas at Austin. In the first half of the talk, Dr. Fontanella will underscore the Fontanella Collection of 19th century Spanish literature which he brought to the Cushing Memorial Library and Archives, in particular its plays called comedias sueltas. This literature is significant historically because it highlights the social, economic, and political changes that occurred in Spain during its decline from an empire to a rather poor kingdom. Dr. Fontanella will also refer briefly to a collection of postcards from the First World War. This is not a lecture limited to Hispanic interests, rather it addresses a much broader topic of concern to all Arts and Sciences. In the lecture’s second half, Dr. Fontanella will examine the phenomenon of collecting from the standpoint of both personal experience and certain philosophical stances, and why collecting is fundamental to the mission and reputation of any great educational institution. There will be time for Q&A at the end.
This lecture has been funded by a Notable Lecture Grant from the Melbern G. Glasscock Center for Humanities Research.
