Saint Louis University has an opening for a Library Associate Sr. for Rare Books. I apologize that our administration has not given us permission to include salary. Job Summary: Reporting to the Rare Books Librarian, provides support for the Rare Books Division of Special Collections in cataloging, collections maintenance, instruction, exhibition, and public services. Provides research assistance and carries out projects in the collections as directed. Inventories, copy-catalogs, processes, and digitizes materials, edits image files, and creates accompanying metadata. Shares responsibility as monitor and patron contact for the reading room. Provides reader services and retrieval of materials.



Job Duties (may include any and/or all of the following):



1. Collections Cataloging and Access (50%)

  *   Maintains, updates, and augments bibliographic and item records and serial holdings statements in local integrated library system

  *   For the Rare Book Inventory Project, inputs inventory-level and copy-cataloged records into local integrated library system

  *   For the Rare Book Image Bank, identifies and digitizes materials, edits and uploads image files, inputs metadata, maintains documentation; liaises with the Digitization Center

  *   Provides monthly updates of new acquisitions

  *   Reviews collections and resolves inventory and cataloging discrepancies

  *   Assists in review of collections for subject profiles, genre/form analysis, provenance, and other features



2. Collections Maintenance, Preservation and Conservation (20%)

  *   Provides physical processing for materials, e.g., ownership marking, labeling, barcoding, etc.

  *   Retrieves and shelves materials

  *   Assists in review of backlogs and donations for accession to collections

  *   Assists in transfers and de-accessioning from collections

  *   Supervises or coordinates student workers on specific projects

  *   Manages and maintains rare book stacks in good order: shifts and moves collections as needed; supervises or carries out routine cleaning of collections and collection spaces

  *   Collects and maintains data in climate-monitoring system

  *   Provides phase boxing or other conservation treatment as needed



3. Instruction, Exhibition, Outreach, and Public Programs (20%)

  *   Retrieves and prepares materials for classroom instruction; produces handouts and other ancillary teaching aids as required

  *   Supports or curates exhibitions as needed; produces labels and other exhibition materials and publicity as required

  *   Creates online exhibitions in Omeka

  *   Assists in events organization

  *   Provides regular contributions to the department blog and social media accounts

  *   Administers blog and social media web applications and accounts for the department

  *   Maintains and updates Rare Books website as needed

  *   Acts as administrator for the annual SLU Library Associates Undergraduate Writing Award, managing submissions and creating reports



4. Reading Room Monitoring, Reception, and Reader Services (10%)

  *   Provides reception, registration, and reader services for patrons

  *   Monitors patrons and ensures security of materials while in use by patrons

  *   Collects statistics relating to reading room use

  *   Maintains reading room, forms, and equipment in good order

  *   Retrieves, delivers, and reshelves Rare Book materials for patrons

  *   Instructs patrons in proper use of Rare Book materials

  *   Provides basic reference assistance and orientation with library resources and directs patrons to Rare Books Librarian as needed

  *   Manages and fulfills patron requests for Rare Book reproductions

  *   Responds to email, telephone, and in-person inquiries



Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics

  *   Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy and precision in all activities

  *   Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills

  *   Excellent organizational skills

  *   High degree of proficiency in standard office software, including Microsoft Office 365, and proficiency in acquiring new software skills

  *   Ability to work and solve problems independently and to keep supervisor apprised of progress

  *   Ability to organize and carry projects to successful completion

  *   Ability to perform tasks associated with retrieval and shelving of library materials up to 50 lbs.

  *   Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

  *   Professional and courteous manner toward patrons and colleagues



Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education. Minimum of one year of related experience working with collections or the organization of information. Basic familiarity with Latin or a modern European language. All applicants must upload a cover letter along with their resume and also provide three references. For finalists a writing sample will be requested.



Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience in rare books, the book trade, an academic library, archives, or other research setting. Knowledge of MARC 21 and integrated library systems. Experience with WordPress, Omeka, CONTENTdm, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, or Bridge. Teaching or presentation experience. Supervisory experience. Background in history, theology, literature, or related subjects.
