Job Description Summary

About the Penn Libraries - The Penn Libraries provides a network of information resources and knowledge services that are vital to teaching, research, and learning at the University of Pennsylvania. This network includes 19 physical libraries, recognized for their collections, and a digital library known for innovation and richness of content. Through dynamic programming and exhibitions, and through the acquisition and preservation of literary and artistic artifacts, the Penn Libraries documents a wealth of social and historical periods, bringing scholarship to life at the University and in the various communities it serves.


Reporting to the Director of the Special Collections Processing Center (SCPC), the Rare Book Cataloging Coordinator (Librarian C) will head the Rare Book Cataloging Unit. The Coordinator will supervise three full time rare book catalogers and, when appropriate, train and supervise project catalogers, interns and student workers. This position will create original and copy cataloging of print material in all formats according to national rules and standards for 15th to 21th century titles in the Kislak Center for Special Collections and contribute name authority records to NACO. The Coordinator will define cataloging policies, best practices and workflows and work closely with the SCPC Director and the Heads of the Archives and Manuscripts and the Collections and Metadata Management Units to undertake special projects, streamline workflows and create efficiencies across the SCPC. Working closely with the Hidden Collections Processing Coordinator and other stakeholders, this position will establish cataloging priorities and develop and implement special projects, including seeking grant funding in support of these projects. The Rare Book Cataloging Coordinator will play a central role in division wide strategic planning and will participate in committees, working groups and strategic initiative teams whenever necessary. The position will work in collaboration with other divisions of the Library to develop innovative methods of describing and disseminating library material, for instance through Library linked data and DEI initiatives, by creating metadata standards for digital assets, and by regularly contributing to the Unique at Penn blog. The Rare Book Cataloging Coordinator will be expected to make innovative contributions to collections processing writ large, and will represent Penn Libraries at national and international levels.



Job Description

Job Responsibilities

  *   Manage the Rare Book Cataloging Unit, supervising three full time rare book catalogers, as well as project catalogers, students and interns when appropriate, managing their work and providing guidance.
  *   Original and copy cataloging of print material in all formats according to national rules and standards for 15th to 21th century titles; create NACO records.
  *   Establish cataloging priorities in collaboration with the Hidden Collections Processing Coordinator and other stakeholders; design and lead special processing project plans; write grants to support funding of special projects.
  *   Create policies, best practices and workflows for the cataloging of print material; work closely with the SCPC Director, the Head of the Archives and Manuscripts Unit and the Collections and Metadata Management Unit Coordinator to undertake special projects, streamline workflows and create efficiencies across the SCPC.
  *   Develop innovative methods of describing and disseminating Library material, for instance through Library linked data and DEI initiatives, by creating metadata standards for digital assets, and by regularly contributing to the Unique at Penn blog.
  *   Serve on Library committees, working groups and strategic initiative teams, participate in division-wide strategic planning and represent Penn Libraries at national and international levels.


Qualifications


Required:

  *   An ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Science and 3 to 5 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. At least five years of professional experience with primary focus on original cataloging of rare materials and a working knowledge of online library systems, RDA, DCRM, AACR2r, LCC, LCSH, and MARC 21 format, as well as other appropriate cataloging and metadata standards, preferred.
  *   Extensive working experience with rare books
  *   Advanced cataloging skills and knowledge of rare book bibliographic description, collation, standards in copy-specific physical description, provenance identification, and bibliographic concepts necessary to distinguish editions, impressions, issues, and states of a given printed title.
  *   Cataloging skills and knowledge of other special collections printed formats, including continuing resources, graphic and cartographic materials.
  *   NACO training and experience creating name authority records.
  *   Demonstrated leadership, organizational skills, and project management skills; demonstrated ability to make decisions independently and work with initiative within the framework of departmental and Library policies and goals.
  *   Demonstrated supervisory skills; excellent oral and written communication skills.
  *   Demonstrated ability to work within and foster a collegial and professional work environment
  *   Excellent knowledge of Latin and at least one modern European language. Familiarity with other European languages, and the ability to work with materials printed in those languages.

Preferred:

  *   Knowledge of Ancient Greek, Hebrew and Yiddish.
  *   Evidence of active participation and involvement in professional and scholarly associations.
  *   Experience writing grants.
