I am thoroughly enjoying this discussion as both a fan of the RBMS
controlled vocabularies and a transplant from North America to the UK.

One of the cultural differences I noticed when moving from the USA to the
UK is a preference for creating and editing records in our local system
rather than in OCLC Connexion. In the three UK institutions where I have
worked as a cataloguer (St Andrews, Cardiff, and Edinburgh), we have worked
exclusively in our local ILS/LMS, with exports to OCLC happening at the
hands of Systems/IT staff with little or no input from cataloguers.

In parallel with this, local fields like 690 seem to be used much less
often than something like a 655 with a $5. Similarly, where I would have
used a 590 note for binding or provenance information in the USA, UK
institutions tend to prefer 561 and 563 fields with $5. When cataloguing in
OCLC Connexion, I took quite a hard line on copy-specific data in fields
which might end up in the OCLC master record, but without being able to
control the point at which our local records end up in OCLC, I've had to
adopt a somewhat more relaxed attitude in line with local practice.

If there are other UK-based cataloguers on this list, I would be interested
to know the extent to which this holds true outside the three institutions
where I've worked.
