Thanks for all the responses. My question is posed in the context of *eventual* application of a DCRMR that also includes instructions for graphics. I still have trouble interpreting a volume entirely of image content - except for the covers - as anything other than "all illustrations" (or a graphic resource, depending on content) in part because the covers aren't included as part of the statement of extent.

>From discussion below, it sounds like DCRMR will encourage cataloging outcomes that are consistent with those guided by DCRM(B) and (G). I look forward to having something like the (G) Appendix H, wherever editors decide to put it.

Hi, all,

Thanks, Elizabeth, for that helpful context. I was not part of the RBMS RDA Editorial Group when this instruction came into being but am currently a chief editor of DCRMR. Like Elizabeth, I agree with Erin's suggestion and think that it allows for (at least some) flexibility until DCRM(G) is fully incorporated into DCRMR.

Best,

Dear all,

I am no longer a member of the DCRMR editorial group, but had served as chief editor when this instruction was drafted. Looking back, this appears to have been an attempt to rewrite DCRM(B) 5C5, Publications consisting entirely or chiefly of illustrations. At the time we drafted this, the RDA definition for "illustrative content" was "A presence of image content that accompanies the primary content of an expression." With that definition, the DCRM(B) instructions for "all illustrations" no longer fit, but the group felt that retaining instructions for "chiefly illustrations" was important. This rewrite was an attempt to RDA-ify the instruction and provide guidance for situations where a work is entirely illustrated, if we can't then record "all illustrations" as illustrative content. Chiefly, we want to avoid having 300 fields such as "1 map : map ; 50 x 35 cm."

Now that we're getting real-world use of DCRMR, this is useful feedback, suggesting that the instruction needs further clarification. I think Erin's suggestion to read this extremely literally makes sense, especially while graphics instructions are still pending.

Elizabeth.

You don't often get email from eric.johnsondebaufre at trincoll.edu<mailto:eric.johnsondebaufre at trincoll.edu>. Learn why this is important<https://aka.ms/LearnAboutSenderIdentification>
I've been following this conversation-which I find very interesting-quite closely and agree that this seems restrictive. But my greater puzzlement comes from the inclusion of maps in the category of the non-textual. Am I just to understand "non-textual" in this context as meaning "containing no textual component *beyond* the text that may or may not be present in the graphic material?"

I wasn't an original DCRMR editor, so I can't speak to why the rule exists, but I'm guessing that "entirely non-textual" is meant to be taken extremely literally.

If there's a title page (engraved or letterpress), a printed cover containing text, or any other speck of transcribable printed content in the resource, you could use DCRMR if you wanted to.

Catch-22: Given that DCRMR doesn't currently include instructions for non-printed non-textual material, this instruction says that you can't use DCRMR to describe the resource. And if you're not using DCRMR, you don't have to follow this restriction.

Even without the conundrum, it seems unnecessarily restrictive.

A question for DCRMR editors:

DCRMR 6.22.37.1<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fprotect-us.mimecast.com%2Fs%2FZQXhC73yPMH73xKi8ZvSA%3Fdomain%3D6.22.37.1&data=05%7C01%7Cfrancis.lapka%40yale.edu%7C717d0746b14b477f92cf08dad17f914c%7Cdd8cbebb21394df8b4114e3e87abeb5c%7C0%7C0%7C638052643091332796%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=DoCCzH2ttbmR%2B1zhaWqqI25LJwhqa60h6yxzkezvybI%3D&reserved=0> says:

If a resource consists entirely of non-textual material (e.g., photographs, portraits, maps), do not record the presence of illustrations. Instead, describe the resource using the instructions for the appropriate content type (e.g., still image, cartographic image, etc.)
https://bsc.rbms.info/DCRMR/phys-desc/Illustrative-content/#62237-resources-consisting-entirely-or-chiefly-of-illustrations<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fprotect-us.mimecast.com%2Fs%2F7yPGC82zQgi4nZ0S1YjVw%3Fdomain%3Dbsc.rbms.info&data=05%7C01%7Cfrancis.lapka%40yale.edu%7C717d0746b14b477f92cf08dad17f914c%7Cdd8cbebb21394df8b4114e3e87abeb5c%7C0%7C0%7C638052643091332796%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=w9RHr6OQxePywBl2wFJvBjmZzfA1bKxqsQLrwLxFctE%3D&reserved=0>

If I've understood this correctly, DCRMR tells us that a work composed entirely of engraved images should be cataloged as a graphic resource. Is that correct? Does it matter whether the resource has a letterpress title page or cover title (for example: https://worldcat.org/title/1290320394<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fprotect-us.mimecast.com%2Fs%2FaVo9C9rA0jU7ogXi3xwuG%3Fdomain%3Dworldcat.org&data=05%7C01%7Cfrancis.lapka%40yale.edu%7C717d0746b14b477f92cf08dad17f914c%7Cdd8cbebb21394df8b4114e3e87abeb5c%7C0%7C0%7C638052643091332796%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=JG88As8f%2BedzRV2SAdQ9dYu7NZh4xpF%2Ff8Tcd78F1dk%3D&reserved=0>)?

For comparison, DCRM(G)'s Appendix H has these introductory remarks:

This appendix provides guidance for cataloging formally published portfolios, books of plates, etc. bearing formal title pages when graphic material characteristics are the primary focus of the description. The primary differences from book cataloging are the presence of the general material designation "graphic," and a statement of extent counts and describes images instead of focusing on pagination. An institution might, for example, decide to catalog volumes that consist chiefly or entirely illustrations as books when the images are reproductive prints, and as graphic material when the images themselves are works of art (see introductory section X on precataloging decisions).

To date, my repository has largely followed the distinction described in that final sentence. For records I see in OCLC as well, volumes of reproductive prints are much more frequently described as books (with DCRMB) than as graphics. In DCRMR, they'd all be graphics? I'd be okay with such a change, though it is significant.

Thanks,
Francis
