I am sharing this information on behalf of my OCLC colleagues.

OCLC is happy to announce to the Rare Book community and others interested that DDR (Duplicate Detection and Resolution software) has recently been updated to exempt from DDR merging records for electronic reproductions that describe reproductions of pre-1830 resources. Records for electronic reproductions have Form of item (008/23) values o (online), q (direct electronic), or s (electronic). DDR was also updated to exempt records for electronic reproductions that have certain codes recorded in 040 $e. The software will now exempt records that have one of 32 codes in 040 subfield $e used to describe rare and archival materials, e.g., dcrmr, gihc, and kam, whether the records are for electronic resources or non-electronic resources. For the complete list of codes in 040 subfield $e that exempt records from DDR merging, see pages 13-14 of these Presentation slides<https://help.oclc.org/@api/deki/files/15058/2023-06-05_Cataloging_Rare_Materials_Defensively.pdf?revision=2> from our June 2023 presentation "Cataloging Rare Materials Defensively."

DDR has also been updated to exempt all records from the same institution (040 subfield $c) from merging when the publication date is before 1900.

We believe this will prevent unwanted merges of bibliographic records which need to remain distinct within WorldCat. Identical records may still be merged by trained participants in OCLC's Member Merge Project.
