[DCRM-L] To be or not to be a colophon...

I stand corrected. I also note that it is a modern book, which is not my area of expertise. Is the original poster looking for a term to identify the location of that information in a note? If so, and if it were me, I would not call it a colophon but rather be explicit about its location.

Getty AAT does allow the term colophon for these statements occurring at the beginning of the book, but that is down towards the end of the 'scope note.'

I have to disagree. Placement at the end of the text is the basic requirement for a colophon. If you try to call that a colophon in your catalog record, people will be expecting to find it at the end.

Good morning

Following my experience with Russian and Ukrainian titles (20th century), this sort of layout with an “ante-colophon” is not that uncommon – the books tend to have the table of contents at the back following the European tradition.

I read, speak and write Russian, so my Czech is only an estimation; but the publication data you have reads like and old-time “explicit,” which in my opinion, qualifies it as a colophon. It says, (para.) “This book was [issued, published] on the 20th day, [of June, I believe] 1937 …” which is a publication statement. Should you call it a colophon? Probably not.

The “page facing title page” you propose is something I have used, or “printer’s statement.” I have used “first printed page” for fine print materials, as well (assuming it is).

Printer’s statements typically do give the type of paper, font used (Bodoni), etc. and the printer’s name (Československá grafická Unie). Here it also gives the publisher: “V… Z…” I’m not sure what Carter says about printer’s statement though.

I hope this helps a little.

Hello cataloging crew,

I have in hand a 1937 Czech book (image attached) with colophon-esque information facing the title page. Can this still be considered a colophon even though it’s not at the back of the book?

I’ve already consulted Carter, which emphasizes the placement as an essential feature…and yet this page seems to have all the trappings of a colophon: date, printer, number and process of illustrations, etc. If not a colophon, what else would this be called? Just “page facing title page”?

Any insight and/or opinions would be most welcome.

Thank you all!
