Dear Colleagues,

I would like to announce that an invitational working conference to revise Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Books (DCRB), sponsored by the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library with support from the Yale University Library, will be held in March 2003. This working conference will allow for concentrated, face-to-face discussion and revision work among a small group of people. The core of the attendance list is formed by current members and liaisons of the ACRL Rare Books and Manuscripts Section Bibliographic Standards Committee. By the end of the four-day conference, we hope to have not only confirmed and articulated basic principles behind descriptive cataloging of rare materials in general, but to have substantially agreed to the revisions to DCRB that will mark its transition to DCRM(B)---Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (Books)).

The invitation list for the DCRM Working Conference necessarily had to be limited to a small group, but we welcome, and indeed will rely upon, contributions from the larger rare materials community. Several commissioned papers will be distributed for public comment before the conference, and comment on draft rules will be solicited afterwards. DCRB-L is the place to stay tuned for the chance to comment. The four papers will be on general principles, transcription issues, machine-press books, and collection-level cataloging. Please e-mail me if you are interested in being added to this discussion list.
