AREA 7

General comments.

References alternate between specific and general, for example, in
7B19.3.1 and 7B19.3.2. The former refers to 7B10 (rather than 7B10.4);
the latter refers specifically to 5B15.3. Other instances are noted
below. [DJL] A consequence of our 11th-hour addition of some of the
sub-numbering. Thanks for paying attention.

I also notice a discrepancy throughout the document regarding the
inclusion of commas and other punctuation within closing quotation
marks. [DJL] I assume you listed all such discrepancies below. If not,
let me know.

Specific comments.

Page 119, bold "7A1. General instructions." [DJL] Fixed

Page 120, bold "7A3. Sources of information" and "7A4. Form of notes."
[DJL] Fixed

Page 125, 7B6.4: change "Give" to "Record." [DJL] Agree; in accordance
with our editorial checklist

Page 126, line 3, delete closing parenthesis. [DJL] Fixed

Page 126, 7B7.3 and 7B7.5: change instances of "give" to "record."[DJL]
Disagree. Although all examples are quoted notes, the cataloger may
transcribe, paraphrase, or summarize statements of limitation, making
"give" the best word for the situation.

There are other instances of "give" in section 7 that could be changed
to "supply" or "record." If the editorial committee feels that this is
important they may wish to review each instance.

Reference in 7B7.5 to 7B19.1 could be made to 7B19.1c. [DJL] Agree;
changed

Page 128, 7B9.2. Reference to Appendix G, specifically G3, might be more
useful than to 0G8.2. [DJL] Added reference to G3.

    Also, italicize "Editorial comment" below [fist] and [maltese
cross]. [DJL] Fixed

Page 128-129, 7B9.3, re: "'chi'." and "'[superscript chi]'." Periods
should be within closing quotation mark. [DJL] Yes, according to Chicago
6.8 (altho' I wish wish wish we Americans followed the more logical
Oxford 'alternative system' (6.10).

Page 129, 7B9.7. In example, the word "Signatures" is not in the correct
typeface. [DJL] Fixed

Page 131, 7B9.11. Confirm that characters in first example are intended
to appear as boxes. [DJL] No! Fixed.

Pages 131-132, 7B10.2. The following notes seem to belong to 7B10.1: "
The first and last leaves are blank," "Volumes numbered: 1, 2A, 2B, 2C,
3," " Printed on vellum," and " Printed on a quarter sheet." [DJL]
Agree. Moved all but the "Printed in 2 columns" example to 7B10.1,
including the note on printing in red (it is recommended as best
practice for any rare book cataloging, so I'd like to keep it with other
more general physical description notes) .

Page 132, 7B10.5. Reference to 7B19 as a whole may be more appropriate
than 7B19.1. [DJL] Agree; changed

Page 134, bold "7B15. Summary." [DJL] Fixed.

Page 135, 7B16.2. In the first example, should there be an apostrophe
either before or after the final "s" of "spinning-wheels"? [DJL] Only if
it appeared in the original (see 0G3.2). In this case, it appears not to
have. It's almost certainly ESTC T49756

Page 136, 7B18.1. Insert period after first instance of "With:". (Unsure
if the period should be placed within closing parenthesis? It looks odd.
See comment re: Page 139, 7B19.3.4 for another possible solution.) [DJL]
Agree; changed

Page 136, 7B18.3. The reference could be made to 7B19.3.4 rather than
7B19.1. [DJL] Agree; changed.

Page 137, 7B19.1c. Reference could be made to 7B10.3 rather than 7B10;
reference could be made to 7B7.5 rather than 7B7. [DJL] Agree; changed
both.

Page 138, 7B19.3.1. The reference could be made to 7B10.4 rather than
7B10. [DJL] Agree; changed

Page 139, 7B19.3.4 gives the instruction, "Preface the note with the
words 'Bound with' followed by a colon," while in 7B18 the colon for
"With:" notes is indicated only implicitly. Should the instructions be
harmonized? I prefer for both intellectual and typographical clarity the
instruction given in 7B19.3.4. [DJL] Agree; changed

7B19.3.6. "'gold-tooled', 'blind-tooled'" should be "'gold-tooled,'
'blind-tooled'" (move comma inside closing parenthesis of "gold-tooled."
[DJL] Changed the first, kept the second outside the parens per Chicago
6.56

7B19.3.7 "end-paper decoration, references" should be "end-paper
decoration; references." [DJL] Fixed. Unsure if "(or related bindings),
etc." should be "(or related bindings); etc."[DJL]  I don't know either;
I don't find explicit reference to it in Chicago, Fowler, or Strunk &
White. This leaves me to fall back on my own punctuational aesthetic,
which is to leave it a comma.
