Hi Stephen. 

I don't know if you saw the correspondence on this subject over the past several days, but many people are in favor of dropping the qualifier altogether. However, Standard Citations standards still require it, hence my encouragement for catalogers to keep to the standard until it is changed. 

I don't see how an official recommendation can be made at the conference, but it would be reasonable to try to get a reading on the issue from participants. I'll be there, as well.

  Were the records in the two sources virtually 
identical? If so what utility is there for anyone 
in adding the qualifier? The Rare Book 
[Cataloging] Team at Yale has decided to drop the 
qualifier in our current cataloging. Chris Smith, 
one of our catalogers, discovered today that we 
can import records into our Voyager system from 
the Star Database. Perhaps the upcoming 
conference on ESTC at the BL can make a 
recommendation on this issue. Jane Gillis from 
Yale's Rare Book Team will be attending.
