Jane and others are right: subject-based classification is better for
discovery by opac shelfmark browse.
But the question always has to be viewed as balancing resources against
benefits. How much bang for the buck do you get by classed shelving
schemas? In my opinion, it is better to use scarce cataloging resources
in authority control or in getting more things cataloged. When you add
to that the benefits of more economical shelving space, the answer is
clear to my mind.
